SCROLL DOWN
Set along the Sagrantino wine route, Gualdo Cattaneo is a medieval gem surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.
In this village of 975 A.D. of Lombard origin you will think to be in a princely fairy tale.
From the terrace of the 20 m high fortress tower called Rocca dei Borgia, which offers an incomparable 360 degrees view on the hills all around, you will be able to spot towers, manors, fortresses and castles, often surrounded by expanses of vineyards as far as the eye can see.
Gualdo Cattaneo’s heart is a tangle of cobblestone streets and squares that echo with children’s laughter, especially in summer, when the hamlet becomes the scenario of festivals and fairs.
In autumn, the air is filled with the scents of new wine and oil, a prelude to gluttonous walks among cellars and oil mills.
If you choose Gualdo Cattaneo for your wedding, you can count on a majestic setting for parties of up to 75.
The perfection of this location is such that already in 1624, the Italian astronomer and physicist Galileo Galilei, who stayed there for a few days, wrote “It is a small compendium of the universe”.
Sagrantino is both the native vine that has been cultivated in this area for centuries and the wine obtained from it, which is labelled with the controlled and guaranteed designation of origin.
But Sagrantino also gives its name to the International Balloon Grand Prix, the Sagrantino Cup, which takes place in summer with the gathering of 100 balloons arriving from everywhere in Europe: a not-to-miss opportunity to add even more magic to your wedding day!
Gualdo Cattaneo belongs to the “Strada del Sagrantino” wine tourism itinerary that winds through the hills of this peaceful part of Umbria near Todi, Assisi and Spoleto, covered by rows of Sagrantino vineyards, where Romantica Italia can arrange for our Bride & Groom and their Guests guided tours of the cellars, tastings in olive mills, all while wandering the cobblestone streets of the villages on a search for precious traces of art and history.
Walking through its streets and squares, you’ll feel almost lost in time.
The hamlet is annotated by its architecture, a highlight being the castle. On the main square of this charming enclave, you will find the Rocca Fortress, a dramatic architectural gem – featuring three towers connected to each other and to the castle walls by underground passages.
Other beautiful buildings include the Church of Sant’Agostino, which is home to some original frescoes, and the Church of Saints Antonio and Antonino.
As if all these wonders were not enough, Gualdo Cattaneo is surrounded by nine castles in a radius of 50 km.
